Kantoka had the opportunity to check in with Mood Cannabis Co. on the Grand Opening of their second store in Nanaimo to talk about employee culture, employee engagement, and advice for those who are looking to enter the cannabis industry. 

“Since our early development the Mood Cannabis Co. business model strives to bring a new sense of professionalism to the industry,” said Mood’s Manager Paul Boudreault. “While it may be easy to see that based on our store designs, this value goes much deeper for us and has been ingrained into our training, coaching, and day to day.”

“We want to break traditional cannabis stigmas through staff and customer education,” said Boudreault when we asked about the values that Mood’s company culture embodies. In fact, education is the centre of what Mood has to offer. Their website is full of informative and compliant educational information, which, to us, is the gold-standard of how cannabis retail stores should be educating their consumers and staff.

Their budtenders, appropriately named “Moodmakers” are trained to make the consumer feel welcome, appreciated, and part of the Mood family from the second they walk in the door. “What brings you into Mood today?” is the question that is intended to start the conversation, as it is open-ended, and allows Moodmakers to assess customers’ level of comfort, experience, and what they’re looking for in their cannabis experience. Moodmakers will pair up with consumers and take them on a tour around the shop, carefully explaining the products, different methods of consumption, and the resources they have to explore product such as the iPad concierge service. Mood identifies this as their “customer experience” cycle, which Boudreault sees as focusing on “building rapport to uncover our customer’s needs while building that long-term relationship.”

We asked Mood to provide us some advice for new graduates, or those who are considering transitioning into the cannabis industry to work within cannabis retail. “Industry experience is always plus,” said Boudreault, adding, “On Vancouver Island, there is certainly no shortage of experienced and passionate individuals.” However, Mood’s training programs are intended to help new hires understand and embody the cannabis retail process from seed to sale. 

Next to experience, attitude is everything, “Our team has been carefully picked to create a group of individuals who will always bring good moods to clients and colleagues,” said Boudreault. He adds that customer service, sales, and competency with computer systems is a must for new hires, as Mood’s business model has adapted many of the industry’s latest technologies to run the store within compliance and keeping customer experience top of mind. 

Boudreault has some valuable advice to offer potential candidates looking to work within the cannabis industry: “Apply for your B.C. Cannabis Workers Certification as soon as possible, and act as if you’re in the role you desire now,” he said. “It’s never been easier to create a personal brand through social media – use this approach to give yourself ownership and direction over your career goals and guide your learning.” In fact, Boudreault is right; in these days of technology, social media, and digital networking, your personal brand can be everything. “When the right opportunity comes around, your personal brand could be the best part to your resume.”
