Are you new to cannabis and wondering how to find the right dose? We have just the guide for you.
Dosing with cannabis may seem complicated at first. After all, cannabis can affect people differently so what works for someone else, might not work for you. Plus, with so many different methods for consuming cannabis, it can feel overwhelming. Still with the right plan you can find your ideal dose, quickly, comfortably and easily.
To find your ideal dose, the best place to start is with a very low dose. Cannabis has what is called ‘biphasic effects,’ which means that different doses can produce opposite effects. You may get the effect you are looking for at low doses – but then get the opposite effect if you use too much. So starting low and slowly working your way up is usually the best way to approach dosing. Many are even keeping their dose low with a new trend called ‘microdosing.
So if you’re new to cannabis and are using inhaled methods like smoking or vaping, you should start with just 1-2 puffs from your pipe, joint or vaporizer. Try this small dose and wait around 15 – 30 mins to see how it affects you. If it didn’t feel like enough, you can try using 2-3 puffs next time you medicate. Continue testing out doses, increasing in small increments each time until you reach a dose that helps with your symptoms. If you start getting negative side effects, go back to the last dose you used without getting these effects.
Edibles and concentrates were also just legalized in Canada on October 17, 2019, and will be available for sale starting mid-December with more available into the new year. If you are using edibles or sublingual oils like these oils from B.C. based producer Emerald Health, a good starting dose is 2.5 – 5mg’s of THC or CBD. Like with inhaled varieties, start with this small dose and titrate up slowly. But with edible options, wait at least 2-3 hours before you assess your dose. It can take this long for edibles to process through your system and take full effect.
